MS the sickness

What ?

verpleegsterMultiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological disorder of the central nervous system in adults. In Belgium at least 10,000 Belgians suffer from multiple sclerosis (MS). Each year again 450 people are diagnosed with this condition.

The name "multiple " refers to the presence of several (multiple) scars in the myelin, the white substance of the brain. These scars appear after repeated and long-term inflammation of the myelin. The myelin is a fatty sheath surrounding the nerve which helps neurons carry electronical signals throughout the brain and spinal cord. If it is destroyed, nerve conductance is impaired and leads to the symptoms of MS.
